"Downtown" Los Angeles is esay enough to identify as that area lying within the freeway ring formed by the Harbor (I-110), the Hollywood (I-101), and the Santa Monica (I-10) and Golden State (I-5) Freeways. Freeway planners placed this massive ring around the historic core of the metropolis, whose surface-street arteries are shown in red below. Broadway and Seventh was the "center" of the metropolis until the 1950s (highest traffic volume). After the completion of the freeways by the 1960s, this entire ring became the "center."
